NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- The University of Chicago women's soccer team picked up a big 2-1 win over North Central (IL) on Wednesday night thanks to a 55th minute winner by
Indira Naylor.
The Maroons struck first in the 17th minute when
Ella Cho connected with
Lucy Harrison-Caldwell who slipped the pass through to
Kamiryn Braxton Grimes who beat the keeper for the opening goal of the game.
In the 24th minute, Naylor had a great chance to double the lead, but the North Central keeper made a great save to keep the score at 1-0.
Sophia Sasaki faced her first test in the 26th minute off a free kick from 30 yards out, and she was able to make the save while laying out full extension to her right.
The Cardinals found the equalizer in the 31st minute off a cross into the box, but the UChicago clearance deflected off the North Central attacked and into the back of the net tie the game at one.
UChicago came out of the half in a fury and found the go-ahead goal in the 55th minute when
Ella Cho beat her defender, dribbled into the 18, and slipped a pass through to the right boot of
Indira Naylor. Naylor buried the shot in the past the Cardinals' keeper to put the Maroons on top 2-1.
The Cardinals had several chances down the stretch to level the scoreline, but the Maroons were up to the task to hold on to the 2-1 victory on the road.
Naylor led the Maroon attack with 5 shots, and Sasaki made two saves on the three shots on goal.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 7-0-1 on the season. The University of Chicago returns to action on Saturday, September 27, as they travel to University Heights, Ohio for the final game of their five-game road trip against John Carroll.
