CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 victory over Carthage on Tuesday night to extend their unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games.
The Maroons jumped out to an early advantage with a goal just 82 seconds into the match. After winning a corner kick,
Edward Wu whipped a perfect ball into the six, and he found the head of
Nick Lorr at the near post to bury the opening goal of the game.
UChicago kept up the pressure in the opening 10 minutes with multiple shots, and they were able to take the advantage when
Alex Gomas took the ball off the foot of the Firebird defender during the high press, and
Chase Perry struck his boot through the ball and found the back of the net to double the lead.
The Maroons would tally seven more shots in the remainder of the first half with four of them forcing saves from the Carthage keeper, but the lead would remain at two heading into the half.
Coming out of the half, UChicago wasted no time once again, earning a corner kick in just 11 seconds when
Alex Gomas beat his defender down the right side of the pitch.
Max Weene crossed a soft ball to the top of the 18, falling to the foot of
Samuel Jimenez who was fouled to earn a penalty kick just 50 seconds into the game.
Evan Kanellos stepped up and buried his fourth penalty kick of the season to extend the lead to the final score of 3-0.
The Maroons outshot the Firebirds 23-2 in the contest, and they held the Carthage attack without a shot on goal in the game.
Kai Walsh led the team with 4 shots, and
Ali Alamery and
Josh Nimeroff combined to bring home the team's third consecutive clean sheet and extend the shutout streak to 311 minutes.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 6-1-3 and extend their unbeaten streak to nine consecutive games, tied for the seventh-longest streak in program history. The University of Chicago returns to action on Saturday, October 4, as they host the NYU Violets in the UAA opener at 11 AM.
