ST. LOUIS -- Senior Bryanne Halfhill (Canfield, Ohio/ Canfield) scored 16 of her game-high 19 points in the second half as the second-ranked University of Chicago women's basketball team defeated eighth-ranked Washington (Mo.) University 65-62 in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams Saturday.

Game Summary

  • Chicago (11-0 overall, 1-0 UAA) fell behind by as many as nine points in the first half and trailed 32-25 at the break.

  • Halfhill (pictured) scored eight points during a 1:16 span as part of a 22-4 Chicago run to open the second stanza.

  • Washington (10-2, 0-1) closed to within a point, 60-59, at the 1:17 mark, but the Maroons capped the victory with a layup from senior Meghan Herrick (Cedarburg, Wis./ Cedarburg) with :48 left and a Halfhill 3-pointer with :07 to go.

Statistical Highlights

  • Halfhill connected on five of eight 3-point attempts en route to her 19-point effort.

  • Senior Taylor Simpson (Lee's Summit, Mo./ Lee's Summit) finished with 14 points, while senior Morgan Herrick (Cedarburg, Wis./ Cedarburg) added 10.

  • Dani Hoover (14 points) and Alyssa Johanson (10) paced Washington.

  • Simpson and Washington's Melissa Gilkey shared game-high rebounding honors with eight boards apiece.

  • Morgan and Meghan Herrick each handed out six assists.

  • Chicago outshot the Bears (49% to 44%), while Washington held the edge on the boards (34-28).

Notes

  • The Maroons handed Washington its second straight home UAA loss, following a 61-51 Chicago win in the regular season finale a year ago. Prior to that, the Bears had won 39 consecutive conference games in St. Louis.

  • Chicago won its 29th straight regular season game and its 14th on the road. The Maroons also extended their UAA winning streak to 15 games.

  • Saturday's game marked the Maroons' first of the year against a top-25 opponent.

  • Chicago overcame a halftime deficit for the third time this season.
