Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- On the first day of its 2012 campaign Sunday afternoon, the University of Chicago baseball team swept a doubleheader from St. Olaf College. After taking the opener 9-0, the Maroons posted a 4-1 extra innings victory in the nightcap.
Game 1 Summary
- Senior RHP Alex Garcia (Chicago, Ill./ De La Salle) tossed a complete-game shutout as Chicago won Sunday's first game 9-0. He scattered six hits while walking only one batter.
- Junior LF Jack Cinoman (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) and freshman SS Jayson Gorski (Orland Park, Ill./ Marist) led the Maroons' 13-hit onslaught. Cinoman went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Gorski went 2-for-3 with two runs and a pair of RBIs.
- Every batter in the Maroons' starting lineup had at least one hit.
- Andres Dzurak (0-3) took the loss for St. Olaf. He allowed seven hits and four runs over 2.2 innings of work.
Game 2 Summary
- Game two went to extra innings after each team managed just one run through the first seven frames.
- Chicago plated three runs in the top of the eighth. Junior CF Ben Bullock (Englewood, Colo./ Regis Jesuit) led off the inning with a double and eventually came around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
- Sophomore 3B Will Katkza (Wynnewood, Pa./ Haverford School) added a two-run single later in the inning.
- Junior RHP Matt O'Connor (Forest Park, Ill./ Northridge) went the distance, allowing only three hits and two walks. He struck out six.
- Alex Lampert (0-2) recorded the loss for St. Olaf (2-8). He was charged with two runs over 7.1 innings.
Highlights & Notes
- Garcia logged his first career shutout in Sunday's opener.
- Prior to Sunday's second game, the Maroons had won only one of their seven previous extra inning affairs dating back to 2009. Chicago was 1-1-1 in extra innings a year ago.
