Maroons Split Doubleheader with Bowdoin

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- On the second day of its spring break trip, the University of Chicago baseball team split a doubleheader against Bowdoin College Monday afternoon. After dropping the first game 6-4, the Maroons rallied for a 2-1 win in game two.

Game 1 Summary

  • Chicago took a 3-2 lead into the top of the fourth inning, but Bowdoin scored three times in the fifth and added another run in the sixth. 1B Duncan Taylor doubled and scored in the Polar Bears' three-run fifth.

  • Trailing 6-3, the Maroons scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying runs on base.

  • Bowdoin DH Dan Findley had two hits and two RBIs in game one.

  • Junior C Tony Logli (Des Plaines, Ill./ Elk Grove) had a two-run double for the Maroons.

  • Bowdoin reliever Gabe Faithful tossed a scoreless fifth to record the victory. I. Edwards pitched the final two innings to notch the save.

  • Freshman RHP Kyle Nitiss (Glencoe, Ill./ New Trier) allowed three runs in the fifth and was charged with the loss.

Game 2 Summary

  • Sophomore RHP Claude Lockhart (Shreveport, La./ Loyola) (pictured) scattered seven hits and allowed just one run over six innings of work as the Maroons (3-1) took the nightcap 2-1.

  • Sophomore 3B/RHP Will Katzka (Wynnewood, Pa./ Haverford School) pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up his first save of the year.

  • Freshman DH Kyle Engel (Downers Grove, Ill./ South) and junior 2B Steven Schwabe (Wood Dale, Ill./ Driscoll Catholic) drove in the Maroons' runs in the top of the fourth.

  • Jesse Abels (5 IP, 5 H, 2 R) took the loss for Bowdoin (8-4).

Notes

  • Katzka's save was his fourth in nine career relief appearances.
