Wheaton Scores Twice in the 9th to Defeat Chicago

Box Score

CHICAGO -- Wheaton College scored a pair of runs on bases-loaded walks in the top of the ninth inning en route to a 6-4 win over the University of Chicago baseball team in the Maroons' home opener Tuesday at J. Kyle Anderson Field.

Summary

  • Wheaton (10-4) took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Maroons (8-5) evened the score on junior 1B J.R. Lopez's (Fort Collins, Colo./ Rocky Mountain) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth.

  • With one out in the ninth, LF Drew Golz doubled down the left field line and CF Justin Zeller followed with a base hit to move Golz to third. After an intentional walk, DH Austin Driggers drew a walk to plate the go-ahead run. RF Alex MaLossi walked two batters later to account for the game's final run.

  • Chicago led 3-1 after three innings as senior C Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) delivered RBI doubles in the first and third frames.

  • RHP Matt MaLossi (1-2) earned the win after retiring all four batters he faced in relief of starter Jimmy McDonald (7.2 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 5 K).

  • Senior RHP Alex Garcia (Chicago, Ill./ De La Salle) allowed four runs (two earned) over 6.2 innings before giving way to junior RHP Jack Cinoman (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young).

  • Cinoman stranded the two runners he inherited in the seventh, but eventually took the loss (1-1) after being charged with three runs over 2.1 innings of work.

Notes

  • With his two doubles, Williams increased his career total to 43 -- one shy of matching the school all-time record.

  • Cinoman went 3-for-4, giving him multiple hits in four consecutive contests.

  • Williams extended his hitting streak to six games.
