Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Wrapping up a six-game road stint, the University of Chicago baseball team split a twinbill against 19th-ranked Washington (Mo.) University Sunday afternoon. After winning the opener 7-1, the Maroons dropped a 9-8 decision in extra innings.
Game 1 Summary
- A seven-run sixth inning and a complete-game three-hitter from sophomore P Claude Lockhart (Shreveport, La./ Loyola) sparked a 7-1 Chicago victory in Sunday's opener.
- After allowing only four base runners through the first five frames, Washington starter Stephen Bonser (5-3) hit three of the first five Maroon batters in the sixth. Chicago later took advantage of a one-out error and a two-out dropped third strike to take a 3-1 lead.
- Freshman SS Kyle Engel (Downers Grove, Ill./ Downers Grove South) (pictured) then delivered the key blow with a three-run double to make it 6-1.
- The Bears scored their lone run in the bottom of the first. CF Kyle Billig led off with a base hit, stole second, then came around to score on an infield groundout later in the inning.
- Lockhart (5-1) won his fourth straight decision with his second complete game of the year. After Washington scored in the opening frame, Lockhart allowed only five base runners over the final six innings.
Game 2 Summary
- Washington LF Matthew Polites drew a two-out based-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Bears to a 9-8 win in the nightcap. The walk off sophomore reliever Will Katzka (Wynnewood, Pa./ Haverford School) plated Brandon Rogalski with the winning run. Rogalski (2-0) also recorded the victory with two innings of scoreless relief.
- Washington led 3-2 after four innings until the Maroons plated five runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead 7-3.
- In the Chicago fifth, junior LF Jack Cinoman (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) delivered a two-run single before coming around to score on a double off the bat of sophomore DH Ricky Troncelliti (Norristown, Pa./ Haverford School). Sophomore RF Brett Huff (Orland Park, Ill./ Sandburg) capped the inning with a two-out single to bring home Troncelliti.
- Washington answered with four runs off four Chicago hurlers in its half of the fifth. 2B Greg Gleicher's two-out, two-run single tied the game at 7-7. Freshman reliever Andrew VanWazer (Arlington Heights, Ill./ Buffalo Grove) ended the threat when he retired 1B Zack Kessinger on a groundout with the bases loaded.
- An RBI single from Cinoman in the top of the sixth gave Chicago (19-10) a short-lived 8-7 lead, but Washington evened the score in the bottom of the inning when pinch-runner Joseph Krumholz stole home with two outs.
Notes
- Cinoman's 18-game hitting streak came to an end when he went hitless in three at-bats in Sunday's first game.
- Washington's game two victory ended the Maroons' six-game series winning streak. Chicago swept the Bears Saturday.
