Seven-Run 8th Inning Lifts Aurora Past UChicago

AURORA, Ill. -- Aurora University broke open a tie game with seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning en route to a 14-7 win over the University of Chicago baseball team Friday.

Summary

  • Chicago (11-7) led 6-1 after two innings. Senior C Stephen Williams (Malibu, Calif./ Malibu) delivered a two-run double in the first and followed with a run-scoring single in the second. Sophomore RF Brett Huff (Orland Park, Ill./ Sandburg) (pictured), who was 4-for-5 on the day, drove in a run in each of the first two frames.

  • Aurora (14-4) took advantage of three Chicago errors to plate four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

  • With the game tied 7-7 after seven and one-half innings, Aurora plated seven runs on just four hits in the decisive eighth inning. The Spartans benefitted from two wild pitches, an error, a hit batsman, and a balk. LF Josh Davidson collected two of his four RBIs in the inning.

  • RHP Tom Ozlanski, the fourth Aurora hurler, picked up the win (1-1) with two innings of scoreless relief.

  • Sophomore RHP Will Katzka (Wynnewood, Pa./ Haverford School) was charged with the loss (0-1), as he was responsible for all seven runs (six earned) in the eighth.

  • Chicago outhit Aurora 18-10.

Notes

  • Aurora ended the Maroons' two-game series winning streak.

  • Junior LF Jack Cinoman (Chicago, Ill./ Whitney Young) went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games -- all with multiple hits.

  • Friday's game marked the Maroons' first of the season played on an opponent's home field.
