Maroons Defeat Carleton in NCAA 2nd Round

CHICAGO -- The University of Chicago defeated Carleton College 5-0 in the second round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship Saturday at Bally's in Hyde Park.

With the victory, the Maroons (20-4) advance to Sunday's third round matchup with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater scheduled for noon at the Stagg Field Courts. UW-Whitewater (23-4) defeated Washington (Mo.) University 5-1 in Saturday's other second round contest.

Chicago swept the doubles competition, getting wins from seniors Kendra Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./ Vero Beach) and Carmen VacaGuzman (Wyoming, Mich./ Grandville) at No. 1 (8-3), senior Jennifer Kung (Sunnyvale, Calif./ Homestead) and junior Linden Li (Great Falls, Va./ Langley) at No. 2 (8-3), and freshmen Kelsey McGillis (Great Falls, Va./ Flint) and Megan Tang (Clayton, Calif./ Clayton Valley) at No. 3 (8-2).

A 6-1, 6-1 VacaGuzman win at No. 3 singles gave the Maroons at 4-0 lead. Chicago then closed out the match when Tang notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles.

Both of Saturday's second round matches were moved indoors as a result of rainfall throughout the day.

Carleton ended its season at 19-6.

  • Chicago advanced to the Division III Championship third round for the fourth consecutive season.
