Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago men's soccer team began its season with a 1-1 tie versus No. 17-ranked Dominican University on Friday.
The Maroons and the Stars each ran their records to 0-0-1.
Both teams started the game struggling to sync their offenses and passing. The first chance of the game came from Dominican as Logan Marvin smacked a wide-open shot point blank at Chicago goalie David Cohen, who made the save. Dominican ended up with a 5-4 shot advantage in the opening half.
The second half picked up the pace offensively right from the onset. Chicago's David Campillo blasted a shot from right inside the box in the first 90 seconds, but the save was made by Dominican's Wesley Zank. It wouldn't be long until the Maroons broke through. A Dominican foul just outside the box set up a free kick in the 49th minute. Freshman Jorge Bilbao took the shot and placed it perfectly into the upper right 90 for his first collegiate goal.
With the lead in hand, the Maroons kept the momentum on their side, pressing forward doggedly and creating multiple offensive chances. Chicago kept control of almost the entirety of the second half, up until the final four minutes of the game. A yellow card on Chicago gave the Stars a free kick from midfield, and Ryan Roberts capitalized with a header that went just inside the right post to knot the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute.
That would end up being the final score as both teams played through two scoreless overtime periods. Chicago ended the game with a 13-10 shot advantage and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Dominican committed more fouls 19-11 and four total yellow cards were handed out. Cohen made four saves in 110 minutes while his Dominican counterpart Wesley Zank saved three balls.
The Maroons are back in action at Elmhurst College for a 7 PM game on Monday.
