Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago women's soccer team got its offense back on track with a pair of second-half goals to defeat University of Rochester 2-1 on Friday.
The Maroons improved to 8-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets fell to 5-4-3 overall, 0-1-2 in conference action.
Both teams had their opportunities to score in the first half. UChicago pressed the action early on and earned four corner kicks in the first eight minutes of game time. The Maroons made forays into the box on multiple occassions, but the setups did not connect to oncoming runners.
The visitors weathered the storm and pressed forward on the counterattack. Rochester's leading scorer Jessica Smith made dangerous runs on goal and got behind the UChicago defense. The Maroons struggled to clear the ball out, however, the Yellowjackets couldn't get the ball past the goalie.
The score was tied 0-0 at halftime, with UChicago leading in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (6-0).
Rochester got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute to go up 1-0. A hand ball led to a free kick near the right corner flag, and Katie Grasso converted a header goal in front.
Five minutes later, the Maroons struck back with a goal of their own. Junior forward Meghan Derken went on a run down the left side and sent the ball in front to senior forward Natalia Jovanovic near the right post. Jovanovic popped the ball up in the air by the goal mouth and Derken ran in to tap it past the goalie.
UChicago scored the game winner in the 76th minute. Junior midfielder Sara Kwan stole the ball at midfield and made a move up the center. She then dished to the left wing to sophomore forward Julia Ozello, who shot the ball into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the year.
The Maroons finished with 23 shots, including 15 on goal, while the Yellowjackets took 11 shots. UChicago led corner kicks 8-0. Junior goalkeeper Jacinda Reid (2-2-2) got the win, making four saves with one goal allowed in 80 minutes. Senior goalie Angela LaScala-Gruenewald also worked 10 minutes between the pipes.
