Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- The University of Chicago women's basketball team rallied back from a double-digit deficit in the second half and took the lead, but Emory University owned over the final six minutes to win 80-65 on Sunday.
The Maroons fell to 7-15 overall (3-8 in UAA). The No. 20-ranked Eagles (19-3 overall, 9-2 UAA) won for the eighth time in their last nine games.
It was Senior Day for the Maroons, who honored senior guard Jenna Lillemoe before the final home game of her career at the Ratner Athletics Center. Lillemoe tallied eight points off the bench in the contest.
Emory employed its full-court press to good effect early on, grabbing a 13-2 lead over the first six minutes of the game. UChicago soon began to break the press with regularity and sped up the game to gain the advantage. The Maroons ran past the press and got the ball quickly into the post for layups. The score was tied at 17-17, and UChicago took its first lead of the game 21-19 off a Morgan Donovan bank shot.
The increased speed played to the home team's strengths, but the Eagles started to adjust in the final minutes and utilized their efficient offense to enter halftime with a 37-29 lead. UChicago shot 52.2 percent in the half and held an 18-11 rebounding edge with its active post players controlling the boards. Emory forced 13 UChicago turnovers in the half.
The Maroons continued to play solid defense in the post in the second half. On the other end, Ali Shaw got UChicago going with points from inside, outside and the free throw line. The sophomore forward scored eight points in-a-row for the Maroons to get the team within striking distance at 47-41.
Emory answered each UChicago run with scores of their own to keep the lead. But a pair of threes by Paige Womack and a jumper by Lillemoe helped the home side capture the lead at 60-59 with 6:22 remaining on the clock.
Emory kept its composure and seized the game for good with an 18-0 run over the next five minutes. The Eagles ended up forcing 23 turnovers that resulted in 21 points, while only committing six turnovers of their own.
The Maroons held sway on the boards once again by a 37-26 margin. This marked the ninth time in the past 10 games that UChicago has come out on top in the rebounding column.
