Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- In its first action of a 12-game spring trip, the University of Chicago baseball team split a doubleheader with Grinnell College on Sunday. Grinnell took the first game 4-3 and UChicago won the second game 16-3.
The Maroons ran their record to 1-2 while the Pioneers are 3-7.
Game One - Grinnell 4, UChicago 3
Grinnell tallied the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and came away with the seven-inning victory. The Pioneers opened the scoring in the initial frame on a wild pitch. Ricky Troncelliti tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Grinnell retook the lead with a two-run homer of its own in the fifth. UChicago responded again with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning by Tony Logli. The Pioneers finished off the scoring in the sixth on an RBI single.
The Maroons were held to six hits and committed two errors. Matt O'Connor (0-2) took the loss on the mound. The senior pitched 5-1/3 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and four walks while striking out four. Ray Kim tossed 1-2/3 innings of hitless relief.
Game Two - UChicago 16, Grinnell 3
UChicago's offense exploded in game two with 17 hits and a seven-run third inning to cruise to its first win of the season. After Brett Huff singled in a run in the first inning, the Maroons started the third inning strong by loading the bases. Kyle Engel came through with a three-run triple and then scored on Dylan Massey's single. Logli stroked another RBI double and Ben Bullock capped the outburst with a two-run homer.
The Maroons went on to score three more times in the fifth, three times in the sixth and twice in the seventh. Jack Cinoman hit a solo homer and then cracked a three-run shot over the fence during that time. Steven Schwabe added a two-run double, Bullock drew a bases-loaded walk and Cinoman plated another run with an RBI single.
Starting pitcher Drew Nicholson (1-0) earned the victory, tossing six innings with eight hits, three runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Simon Swanson threw one inning of relief with no hits allowed and one strikeout.
Cinoman led the offense with three hits and five RBI. Bullock was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Schwabe went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Huff and J.R. Lopez tallied two hits each.
