Box Score 2 AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Despite falling behind early in both games, the University of Chicago baseball team rallied back to sweep a doubleheader over Colby College 16-12 and 5-4 on Saturday. The Maroons finished their spring trip with a 7-6 record.
Game One - UChicago 16, Colby 12
Colby jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the initial two innings. Dylan Massey tallied UChicago's first run in the bottom of the second with an RBI single. The Maroons then captured the lead by exploding for eight runs on nine hits in the third inning. Five-straight singles got UChicago rolling, with RBI by Jack Cinoman and Ricky Troncelliti. Steven Schwabe then brought in a run on a fielder's choice and Troncelliti scored on a balk. J.R. Lopez stroked an RBI double, while Tim Sonnefeldt and Kyle Engel each knocked RBI singles. Sonnefeldt then scored on an error to take a 9-7 lead.
Colby got back on top with five runs in the fifth inning. But UChicago responded with seven of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Maroons loaded the bases and got an RBI sacrifice fly from Ben Bullock. Engel added another RBI single immediately after. Brett Huff had a two-run single. An infield error scored Schwabe, and Lopez came around to bat again with a two-run single.
Engel led the offensive attack by going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Lopez hit 3-for-4 with three RBI. Massey, Sonnefeldt and Huff all had two hits and one RBI each. The Maroons totaled 17 hits.
Reliever Ray Kim got the win by throwing the final 2-1/3 innings and struck out two with two hits allowed. Starter Kyle Nitiss tossed the first 4-2/3 innings with a pitching line of 12 hits, 12 runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
Game Two - UChicago 5, Colby 4
Once again, the Mules grabbed the advantage with a 4-0 lead after three innings. The Maroons tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth with all four runs being unearned. Bullock and Cinoman each scored on errors while William Katzka cracked a two-run double.
The game-winning run came in the fifth inning when Bullock reached on an error and scored on Cinoman's sacrifice fly. Pitcher Lucas Friss then put the clamps on Colby the rest of the way by only allowing one hit over the final four frames. Friss got the seven-inning win with five hits, four runs (three earned), four walks and four strikeouts.
UChicago finished with five hits, which came from five different batters. Katzka's two RBI led the way.
