Box Score 2 MONMOUTH, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team hit seven home runs on Sunday en route to a 22-4 win over Monmouth College and a 17-7 loss to St. Norbert College.
The Maroons ran their record to 13-8. The Fighting Scots fell to 5-16 while the Green Knights improved to 14-6.
Game One - UChicago 22, Monmouth 4
UChicago took advantage of the windy conditions and slugged six home runs against Monmouth. The Maroons got going right away with six runs in the first inning. The next three frames were all multi-run innings as well as UChicago tallied three runs in the second, five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth. The Maroons closed out the scoring with four runs in the sixth.
UChicago finished with 16 hits on the day, led by Jack Cinoman's 4-for-5 performance at the plate. With his triple in the fourth inning, Cinoman broke the school record for career triples with 17. Mark Mosier held the record since 1997.
Kyle Engel had a career day as all three of his hits went over the fence for home runs. The sophomore also recorded eight RBI. Ricky Troncelliti jacked a three-run homer in the first inning as part of a 2-for-4 day with four RBI. Ben Bullock and Brett Huff both went 2-for-4 with one homer and two RBI each.
Starting pitcher Kyle Nitiss (2-0) earned the victory with five innings of work. He allowed six hits and four runs with two walks. Anthony DeRenzo tossed two innings of relief with two walks.
Game Two - St. Norbert 17, UChicago 7
The Green Knights seized control with five runs in the first inning and they led wire-to-wire. St. Norbert also had two more big rallies with five runs in the third and four runs in the sixth.
The Maroons brought in two runs in the second inning. The first three batters reached base, setting up an RBI sacrifice fly by Dylan Massey and an RBI double by Brenden Dunleavy. UChicago drew within 6-4 in the third inning thanks to RBI singles by Engel and Massey.
Cinoman hit UChicago's seventh homer of the day with a two-run shot in the sixth inning. Dunleavy capped the scoring with a run-scoring double in the seventh.
The Maroons totaled 13 hits with three errors defensively. Tony Logli went 3-for-3 at the plate while Engel and Dunleavy both hit 2-for-4. Cinoman and Massey collected two RBI each.
Alex Terry (1-2) took the loss on the mound, going three innings with eight hits, 11 runs, four walks and two strikeouts. Andrew VanWazer tossed 2-1/3 innings in relief with four hits, three runs, one walk and one strikeout. Chris Warren threw 2/3 of an inning with two hits, two runs and one walk. Ray Kim allowed two hits and one run.
