Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Senior J.R. Lopez stroked a walk-off single in game two to help the University of Chicago baseball team sweep a doubleheader 9-2 and 4-3 over Rockford College on Sunday.

The Maroons improved to 16-8 while the Regents fell to 9-17.

Game One - UChicago 9, Rockford 2

In the top of the first inning, Rockford loaded the bases with two outs and drew a walk to go up 1-0. UChicago quickly tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple by Kyle Engel.

After the Regents tallied an unearned run in top of the second, the Maroons jumped ahead for good with five runs in their half of the second. Back-to-back RBI singles by Tony Logli and Ben Bullock started the rally and Logli came around to score on a passed ball by the catcher. Engel then added to his RBI total with a two-run single through the right side.

Steven Schwabe's single in the third and Brett Huff's single in the fifth made the score 8-2 in favor of the home team.

In the sixth inning, Rockford put runners on second and third with one out. But Maroons pitcher Matt O'Connor cleanly fielded a hard grounder back to the mound for the second out and then forced a short chopper to third base to escape the jam.

UChicago started off the bottom of the sixth with three-straight singles, including Ricky Troncelliti's RBI hit to account for the final 9-2 score.

O'Connor (3-2) threw all seven innings to earn his third-straight victory. The senior struck out six batters while holding the visitors to four hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks.

The Maroons totaled 13 hits and two errors. Engel led the way with a 3-for-4 day that included three RBI. Jack Cinoman and Lopez both went 2-for-3. Huff hit 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Game Two - UChicago 4, Rockford 3

The Maroons wasted no time in game two, loading the bases in the first inning. Lopez delivered with a two-run single up the middle. The Regents loaded the bases themselves in the third inning, but came up empty to still trail 2-0.

Rockford led off the fourth inning with a double and cut the lead to 2-1 on a single two batters later. The Regents tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and grabbed a 3-2 lead with an RBI infield single in the sixth.

Down to their final two outs in the seventh, Bullock singled and moved to second base on a wild pitch. Schwabe came up clutch with an RBI single to right center to tie the game. Cinoman drew a walk to put runners on first and second, and with two outs, Lopez stepped to the plate. The senior first baseman then belted the game-winning single to right field which scored Schwabe standing up.

The Maroons were held to eight hits with one error committed. Lopez went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Cinoman was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Relief pitcher Anthony DeRenzo (2-0) got the win, tossing the final two innings while allowing one hit and striking out two. Starting pitcher Lucas Friss lasted four innings with two runs, seven hits and two strikeouts. Ray Kim threw one inning of relief, with two hits and one run allowed.
