Box Score ELMHURST, Ill. -- Elmhurst College rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat the University of Chicago baseball team 13-12 on Wednesday.
The Maroons ran their record to 16-9 while the Bluejays evened their record at 14-14.
UChicago scored five runs in the third inning on only one hit. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, and Kyle Engel and Ricky Troncelliti both drew walks to force in one run each. J.R. Lopez then knocked in two runs with a single and Tony Logli followed two batters later with an RBI walk of his own.
The Maroons put three runners on again in the fourth inning and Lopez brought them in with a three-run double to push their lead to 8-1. However, Elmhurst got right back into the game with two runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth to knot the score at 8-8.
UChicago's offense came up with another big inning in the eighth, scoring four runs on three-consecutive singles by Dylan Massey, Logli and Ben Bullock. But the Bluejays answered with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to steal the victory.
The Maroons tallied 10 hits, 11 walks, four hit-by-pitches and three errors. Lopez led the hitters by going 3-for-6 with five RBI. Engel was 3-for-5 with one RBI. Logli went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two walks. Massey hit 2-for-4 with one RBI and Troncelliti drew four walks.
Andrew VanWazer (1-3) was the losing pitcher in 1/3 of an inning of action with two hits, one run and one strikeout. Alex Terry started the game and pitched 5-2/3 innings with nine hits, six runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Kyle Nitiss threw 1-1/3 innings with three hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and two strikeouts. Drew Nicholson tossed one inning with four hits, four runs (three earned), two walks and one strikeout.
