Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. -- Strong pitching determined the outcome of both games as the University of Chicago baseball team split a doubleheader with Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday. The Maroons (17-10) won the first game 4-1, while the Bears (21-13) won the second game 3-0.

Lopez (1B), Drew Nicholson (P), Matt O'Connor (P) and Steven Schwabe (INF). Game One - UChicago 4, Washington-St. Louis 1
UChicago put base runners on right away in game one, starting both the first and second innings with a pair of singles. But WashU starting pitcher Stephen Bonser bore down and got out of both innings unscathed.
The third inning was a different story for the home team. Ben Bullock reached on a throwing error and scored on Jack Cinoman's RBI groundout. With two outs, the Maroons strung together four-straight hits to plate a pair of runs. J.R. Lopez doubled over the right fielder's head and in the play at the plate, Kyle Engel slid in just ahead of the catcher's tag. Brett Huff's single to center scored Lopez to stake UChicago to a 3-0 lead.
Maroons starting pitcher Matt O'Connor cruised through the first three innings without allowing a hit. The senior demonstrated good control especially with his breaking ball, forcing groundout after groundout.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cinoman cracked his sixth triple of the year to the right field corner to increase the margin to 4-0.
Down to their final at-bat, the Bears picked the seventh inning to stage their rally. An error and two singles filled the bags with no outs. WashU followed with a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. But a popout and groundout to shortstop ended the game.
O'Connor (4-2) won his fourth-straight game with a complete-game effort. The senior's pitching line was seven innings with five hits, one unearned run, one walk and four strikeouts. Over his past four starts, O'Connor owns a 1.55 ERA.
The Maroons tallied 10 hits in the game led by Lopez, who went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Huff was 2-for-3 with one RBI and Cinoman added two RBI.
Game Two - Washington-St. Louis 3, UChicago 0
While O'Connor was dominant in game one, WashU starting pitcher Dom Quaranta was equally up to the task in game two. The righthander kept UChicago hitters off balance across seven innings with an array of pitches and only allowed two hits and one walk.
The Bears went up 2-0 the first inning thanks to three-straight doubles. A solo home run in the third inning accounted for the game's last run.
Anthony DeRenzo (2-1) took the loss on the mound, hurling four innings with six hits, three runs and three strikeouts. Ray Kim relieved DeRenzo for the final three innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. UChicago's two hits came from Lopez and Steven Schwabe.
