Box Score WHEATON, Ill. -- The University of Chicago baseball team pounded out 17 hits to help get pitcher Matt O'Connor his fifth-straight victory in a 12-1 win at Wheaton College on Wednesday.
The Maroons improved to 21-11 while the Thunder fell to 12-23.
Kyle Engel got the offense rolling by leading off the top of the second inning with a ground-rule double. J.R. Lopez followed with an RBI single to open the scoring. Dylan Massey looped a single down the right field line that just stayed fair to plate a second run.
In the top of third, the Maroons brought in three more runs. Jack Cinoman recorded an RBI groundout and Lopez stroked his second RBI single of the day. The senior first baseman eventually came around to score on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 5-0.
Cinoman kept producing in his subsequent at-bats, roping an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run triple to the right field corner in the sixth. Engel brought Cinoman in with an RBI single and Massey capped the inning with a two-run single. UChicago scored its final run in the top of the seventh when Engel collected an RBI double to give the visitors a 12-0 lead.
On the mound, Maroons starting pitcher O'Connor (5-2) was gunning for his second shutout of the season, but Wheaton broke it up with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. The senior righthander then finished off the inning to earn his fifth-straight win. His pitching line included six strikeouts, four hits, one run and three walks over seven innings. Over his past five starts, O'Connor has a 1.50 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 36 innings.
Five different Maroons had multi-hit performances among UChicago's 17 hits. Engel was 4-for-5 with two RBI. Cinoman (four RBI), Massey (three RBI) and Lopez (two RBI) all had three hits each. Ben Bullock added two hits.
