Box Score 2 ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The University of Chicago baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Washington University-St. Louis by scores of 13-2 and 10-7 on Saturday.
The Maroons dropped to 24-14 while the Bears improved to 25-15.
Game One - Washington-St. Louis 13, UChicago 2
WashU's offense built an 8-0 lead after three innings and kept building on that advantage throughout game one. UChicago got its first run in the fourth inning off a double play and scored again in the fifth inning courtesy of Tony Logli's RBI double.
The Maroons were held to six hits while committing three errors on defense. Dylan Massey went 2-for-3 to lead the offense.
Matt O'Connor (6-3) had his six-game win streak snapped after starting the game on the mound. The senior lasted 4-2/3 innings while allowing 11 hits, 12 runs (10 earned) and six walks with two strikeouts. Alex Terry tossed 3-1/3 innings of relief with three hits, one unearned run, one walk and three strikeouts.
Game Two - Washington-St. Louis 10, UChicago 7
The two teams alternated scoring early on and were tied at 4-4 going into the fourth inning. UChicago scored on an error in the first inning and Steven Schwabe knocked an RBI single in the second inning. The Maroons took advantage of another error to score in the third inning and tied the game with Massey's subsequent RBI single.
However, WashU kept swinging hot bats with six runs over the next two frames to go up 10-4. UChicago scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and made things interesting in the ninth inning. Back-to-back RBI singles by William Katzka and Massey cut the deficit to 10-7, and a walk then loaded the bases. But the Bears retired the final two batters to preserve their victory.
UChicago banged out 15 hits with one error. Lopez hit 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Massey (two RBI), Brett Huff, Tony Logli, Ricky Troncelliti and Schwabe all had two hits each.
Lucas Friss (3-1) absorbed his first loss of the year, going four innings with 13 hits, seven runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Drew Nicholson tossed one inning of relief with four hits and three runs. Ray Kim hurled two innings with one hit and one walk. Anthony DeRenzo wrapped it up with a spotless final inning.
