Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Chicago women's basketball team utilized strong rebounding and seven three-pointers in the second half to defeat Case Western Reserve University 80-66 on Sunday.
The Maroons ran their record to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Spartans fell to 7-9, 1-3 in the UAA.
UChicago scored the first six points of the game and led 13-6 after a three-pointer and layup by junior forward Ellie Greiner. Another three by Greiner helped finish off a 13-4 run that put the visitors ahead 28-16. But Case answered with a 17-4 run to grab the lead 33-32. Junior guard Claire Devaney made a layup to recapture the advantage 34-33 going into halftime.
The Spartans shot 48.1 percent from the field compared to 38.7 percent by UChicago. However, the Maroons got after the offensive boards, which accounted for 11 of their 19 rebounds in the half. Greiner led the way with eight points, freshman forward Britta Nordstrom scored six points and Devaney tallied five points with seven rebounds.
The Maroons regained their footing in the second half. Devaney made two layups while Greiner added a layup and three-pointer to make the score 43-35 in favor of UChicago. Back-to-back three-pointers by Greiner and sophomore guard Paige Womack pushed the lead to 49-37. Devaney capped a 16-5 run with two more layups to stake the team to a commanding 65-46 advantage.
The Maroons netted seven of their nine treys in the second half, including a pair by Womack to go up 75-59. The visitors coasted from there to get the victory. UChicago held sway in the paint with a 41-31 rebounding edge, including a 20-10 lead on the offensive boards.
