JANESVILLE, Wis. – The University of Chicago men's tennis team dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Friday. The No. 30-ranked Maroons evened their record at 3-3, while the No. 24-ranked Warhawks improved to 7-4.
Freshman Max Hawkins and sophomore Gordon Zhang teamed up to win 8-2 at No. 2 doubles. But the host Warhawks took the other two doubles matches by identical 8-6 scores. The two sides then split the six singles matches, giving Wisconsin-Whitewater the win. Junior Deepak Sabada and freshman Brian Sun won their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, in straight sets. Hawkins picked up a hard-fought win at No. 5 singles with a pair of sets that were decided via tiebreaker.
