Maroons women's basketball keeps rolling offensively in 83-70 win over Rochester

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago women's basketball team led the University of Rochester from start to finish in an 83-70 win to push their winning streak to three on Sunday.

The win was the Maroons sixth in seven games and improved their record to 12-8 overall and 6-3 in the UAA. The Yellowjackets fell to 8-12 on the year and 2-7 in the league standings.

The Maroons started out in control with a bucket and one by freshman forward Britta Nordstrom just seven seconds into the game. UChicago built a 16-6 lead seven minutes into the contest, which expanded to 22-8 thanks to cold field-goal shooting by the Yellowjackets. The visitors only converted 14 percent of their attempts at that point.

Rochester pulled together a 9-0 run to cut the UChicago lead to 28-23 with six minutes left in the first half, thanks to four points from senior forward Loren Wagner. The Maroons rebuilt an 11-point lead but the Yellowjackets scored five points in the final minute of the half to go to the break with a 38-32 advantage for the home side.

UChicago shot 50 percent from the field in the first half compared to 36.4 percent by Rochester. Nordstrom tallied a team-high 11 points in her 12 minutes on the floor.

The two teams traded scores in the early going of the second half as the Maroon lead was still six with 14 minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore guard Paige Womack poured in seven second-half points as UChicago went ahead by nine with 11 minutes left in the contest. The Maroons were efficient on offense, constantly probing the defense for openings and aggressively driving to the hoop for layups at every opportunity.

Rochester would not go away and junior guard Ally Zywicki's three looked to give the Yellowjackets life. But the Maroons got a pair of threes of their own from sophomore guard Caitlin Moore and senior guard Julie Muguira to build the lead to 12 points with eight minutes left.

The UChicago advantage continued to balloon as a Nordstrom layup put the lead at 17. The Yellowjackets got a three from Zywicki, and Nordstrom immediately responded with a three of her own. Junior guard Claire Devaney kept up her offensive tear with a three-pointer to make the score 75-53 with 3:54 left on the clock.

Rochester tried to make a game of it with a full-court press and was able to get the lead down to nine by forcing turnovers. However, the visitors ran out of time and UChicago was able to make their free throws to come away with the UAA home win.

Devaney recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 23 points and 12 rebounds. The junior kept up her effective work in the post, shooting 7 of 9 from the field with a number of tricky layups scored through contact. She has now made 44 of her past 57 shots (77.2 percent).

Wagner was able to haul in 20 rebounds for the Yellowjackets in the losing effort. The Maroons won the rebounding battle 42-36 and points from the bench 30-17.
