St. Olaf tops UChicago in baseball doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The University of Chicago baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to St. Olaf College, 4-3 and 8-4, on Tuesday. The Maroons dropped to 0-6 on the season.

Game One – St. Olaf 4, UChicago 3

Errors proved costly for the Maroons, as their five defensive miscues led to three unearned runs in the game. St. Olaf went ahead 1-0 in the first inning on an RBI single, and the Oles were able to capitalize on errors to lengthen innings and score in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Junior outfielder Edward Akers doubled to lead off the third inning and came around to score on an error to make the score 2-1. UChicago also plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior third baseman Kyle Engel had an RBI groundout and senior outfielder Ricky Troncelliti recorded an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-3. But the Maroons were unable to get the equalizer.

Freshman Thomas Prescott (0-1) threw the opening 6-1/3 innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Senior reliever Ray Kim got the final two outs of the seventh inning, both coming on pickoffs. UChicago's six hits came from six different players in the lineup.

Game Two – St. Olaf 8, UChicago 4

St. Olaf scored two unearned runs in the second inning and four runs in the third inning to seize control of the game. The Oles loaded the bases in the third and cleared them with a three-run double.

Troncelliti began the fourth inning with a double and then scored on senior outfielder Brett Huff's RBI single. Junior catcher Brenden Dunleavy drove in Huff from third base on a groundout to make the score 6-2.

The Oles responded with two runs in their half of the fourth, and UChicago answered back with two runs as well in the fifth. Troncelliti's RBI groundout and Huff's RBI single accounted for the final 8-4 score.

Junior Kyle Nitiss (0-1) took the loss on the mound. He lasted four innings with seven hits, eight runs (five earned), two walks and four strikeouts. Sophomore Alex Athenson threw the final two innings, with one walk and one strikeout.
