Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Chicago baseball team struggled offensively and was swept by Colby College 3-0 and 5-0 on Thursday. The Maroons fell to 0-8 on the year.
Game One – Colby 3, UChicago 0
Colby scored one run in each even inning. The Mules tallied RBI singles in the second and fourth inning and brought one run in on a double play in the sixth inning.
UChicago's hitters were limited to five hits over seven innings by Colby starting pitcher Scott Goldberg (2-0). Senior outfielder Brett Huff went 2-for-2 at the plate while sophomore catcher Tim Sonnefeldt was 2-for-3.
The Maroons made two errors on defense that led to two unearned runs. Junior starting pitcher Andrew VanWazer took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year. He pitched the first five innings with six hits, two runs (one earned), one walk and three strikeouts. Senior Ray Kim tossed the sixth inning in relief, allowing one hit and one unearned run.
Game Two – Colby 5, UChicago 0
The Mules jumped ahead with a run-scoring single in the first inning and padded their lead with three more in the third inning. Another RBI single in the fourth accounted for the final score.
UChicago's best chance to score came in the bottom of the fourth. The Maroons loaded the bases with two outs, but they weren't able to crack the scoreboard from there. The offense tallied seven hits, with Huff going 2-for-3.
Senior pitcher Chris Warren (0-1) threw the first inning with two hits, one run and one strikeout. Sophomore Mark Landgrebe relieved for two innings, allowing five hits and three runs. Junior Simon Swanson hurled the final four innings. He limited Colby to two hits and one run while striking out two batters.
