CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago women's tennis team came up clutch in a pair of three-set matches to edge Case Western Reserve University 5-4 on Friday.
In their first of three-straight home matches, the No. 12-ranked Maroons moved their record to 8-7. The No. 23-ranked Spartans evened their season mark at 8-8.
Case took an early 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the day. However, UChicago pulled out the narrow team win thanks to third-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Freshman Tiffany Chen bounced back from a tough second set to emerge victorious 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Junior Kelsey McGillis fended off a match point in the second set and went on to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Junior Megan Tang was a winner in both her singles and doubles matches.
"The girls really stepped up today and pulled out a great win," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "We were shorthanded today but we didn't let it be a factor. Kelsey held off a team match point and got a tough win for us. Steph and Megan stepped up as well with big wins. With the match tied, Tiffany kept her cool and pulled out a huge win. We hope to carry this momentum through the rest of the weekend."
