Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team earned a walk-off win in extra innings in game one, but fell victim to a big inning in game two to split a doubleheader with Beloit College on Saturday.
The Maroons moved their season record to 5-16. The Buccaneers ran their mark to 12-9.
Game One – UChicago 4, Beloit 3 (10 innings)
Beloit got on the board first, tallying a two-run single in the third inning. UChicago tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Ricky Troncelliti and an error brought in both runs.
Junior third baseman Andrew VanWazer poked a RBI single in the fifth to put the home team back in front at 3-2. Starting pitcher Alex Terry sailed through the Beloit lineup right up until the ninth inning, when the Bucs tied the game after a single. The senior departed with a pitching line of seven hits, three runs, two walks and three strikeouts in 8-1/3 innings of work. Senior Ray Kim relieved and induced a pair of groundouts to escape unscathed.
The game went into extra innings. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, freshman infielder Ryan Krob's RBI single brought the winning run home to clinch a walk-off win.
The Maroons posted 11 hits and one error, getting two hits each from VanWazer, senior infielder Dylan Massey, junior third baseman Kyle Engel and senior outfielder Brett Huff. Kim (1-2) got the win with 1-2/3 spotless innings.
Game Two – Beloit 13, UChicago 1
The second game of the doubleheader was all Beloit. The visitors went up 4-0 with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Bucs blew the game wide open in the top of the seventh inning when they managed to score nine runs without any hits in the frame. UChicago's three relief pitchers struggled mightily with their control, totaling seven walks and three hit-by-pitches in the inning. Two defensive errors also contributed to put the Maroons behind 13-0.
UChicago's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh when Krob led off with a double and scored on VanWazer's single. VanWazer and junior Anthony DeRenzo both hit 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Maroons committed six errors in the contest and totaled seven hits. Sophomore pitcher Mark Landgrebe (1-1) was saddled with the loss. He pitched the opening 5-1/3 innings, with five hits, three runs (two earned), one walk, one strikeout and one hit-by-pitch. Junior Simon Swanson went 2/3 of an inning with two hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks. Sophomore Alex Athenson lasted 1/3 of an inning with three runs, two walks and one hit by pitch. Senior Chris Warren pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up four runs (one earned) with two walks, one strikeout and two hit-by-pitches. Sophomore Nick Watson picked up the final out with one walk and one strikeout.
