Box Score LOVES PARK, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team held a one-run lead in the sixth inning, but Rockford University came back and won the game in the ninth inning 4-3 on Wednesday.
The Maroons fell to 5-18 while the Regents improved to 13-11.
Rockford scored in the first inning of the game with a RBI single. UChicago then tied it up in the second inning when senior outfielder Ricky Troncelliti singled and eventually scored on a double play groundout.
The home team went ahead again at 2-1 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly. Then in the sixth inning, UChicago broke through to take its first lead. With two outs, junior outfielder Edward Akers knocked a two-run single to right field to make the score 3-2.
The advantage was short lived, however. Rockford laced a RBI double in the bottom of the seventh and the game was once again knotted at 3-3. The Regents loaded the bases with one out in the ninth and ended the contest with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Junior pitcher Anthony DeRenzo (1-3) went the distance on the mound for the Maroons. He finished with seven hits, four runs (three earned), four walks and five strikeouts in 8-1/3 innings of work.
UChicago's defense committed two errors in the game and the offense contributed eight hits. Troncelliti, senior outfielder Brett Huff and freshman infielder Ryan Krob collected two hits each.
