Benedictine defeats Maroons baseball 9-5

Box Score

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team lost to Benedictine University 9-5 on Wednesday. The Maroons fell to 3-11 on the season while the Eagles (3-9) snapped their five-game losing streak.

Benedictine kicked off the game with one run in the top of the first inning thanks to three-straight singles. Junior third baseman Kyle Engel tied the game in the bottom of the frame with a solo home run over the right field fence.

From that point on, the Eagles took control and scored the next eight runs of the game to go up 9-1 in the sixth inning. The visitors plated three runs in the second, one in the third, one in the fifth and three unearned runs in the sixth.

UChicago's bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth with a trio of scores to cut the deficit to 9-4. The Maroons loaded the bases with no outs and freshman Robert Scherl brought one runner in with a RBI groundout. Junior outfielder Edward Akers and senior infielder Dylan Massey followed up with RBI singles to shortstop and right field, respectively.

The home team added one more in the seventh inning when senior outfielder Ricky Troncelliti's run-scoring single went through the right side of the infield. However, that was as close as the Maroons would get as the 9-5 score held up.

UChicago banged out 14 hits with one error while Benedictine totaled 17 hits and one error. Senior outfielder Brett Huff led the team with three hits in four at-bats. Akers, Troncelliti and Massey all came away with two hits and one RBI apiece.

Junior pitcher Andrew VanWazer (0-3) started the game and allowed five runs on 11 hits in his two innings. Junior Simon Swanson entered for three innings of middle relief with three hits, one run and one strikeout to his credit. Sophomore Lucas Friss pitched in the sixth inning, striking out two to go with two hits and three unearned runs. Junior Anthony DeRenzo (one strikeout), sophomore Alex Athenson (one hit) and senior Ray Kim (one strikeout) pitched one inning each in succession.
