Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team recorded 14 hits on offense and utilized solid pitching in an 8-3 win over Elmhurst College on Tuesday.
The Maroons improved to 7-20 and the Bluejays dropped to 11-18.
UChicago scored two runs on only one hit to open the game. A walk, hit by pitch and single loaded the bases. An Elmhurst error scored one run and freshman first baseman Thomas Prescott made a RBI groundout. The Maroons then went ahead 5-0 in the fourth inning. Junior designated hitter Andrew VanWazer, senior outfielder Ricky Troncelliti and senior outfielder Brett Huff all came through with RBI singles in the frame.
The Bluejays cut the lead to 5-1 in the fifth with a RBI single, and UChicago sophomore catcher Kevin Tully got one back with a run-scoring single in the seventh. Elmhurst went on to tally one run in the eight on a wild pitch and another in the ninth on an error. The Maroons closed out their scoring in the eighth with Huff's RBI single and another run coming off a double play.
Anthony DeRenzo (2-3) provided another solid start on the mound for UChicago. The junior limited the Bluejays to six hits, six walks and two runs in 7-1/3 innings. He also struck out four batters and has pitched 15-2/3 innings over his last two starts. Senior closer Ray Kim finished off the final 1-2/3 innings with one hit and one unearned run to earn his second save of the year.
UChicago's 14 hits were the team's second-highest total in a game this season. Troncelliti collected a season-best four hits in five at-bats, while VanWazer was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Huff went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Junior third baseman Kyle Engel and Tully posted two hits each. Defensively, the Maroons committed two errors.
