UChicago baseball sweeps Monmouth 3-2 and 5-4

SOUTH HOLLAND, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep in a pair of one-run games over Monmouth College on Saturday. The Maroons improved to 9-21 while the Fighting Scots fell to 13-16.

Game One – UChicago 3, Monmouth 2

Senior infielder Dylan Massey started game one with a single, stole second base and then scored on a single by junior Andrew VanWazer. Massey then provided more offense in the second inning with a RBI double.

Monmouth tallied one run in the fourth inning, and UChicago answered back to go up 3-1 in the fifth inning. Senior outfielder Ricky Troncelliti singled and eventually came around to home on a single and an error on the same play.

The Fighting Scots cut the lead down to one again in the sixth inning with a RBI groundout. Senior closer Ray Kim prevented any chance of a tying run and picked up his third save of the season in two innings of work. Freshman pitcher Thomas Prescott (1-3) picked up his first collegiate win in five innings. The lefthander struck out five to go with six hits, two runs and five walks.

UChicago totaled eight hits offensively and made one error. Massey went 2-for-2 with one RBI and made trouble on the base paths with three steals. Junior outfielder Anthony DeRenzo and sophomore catcher Tim Sonnefeldt both went 2-for-3.

Game Two – UChicago 5, Monmouth 4

In the second game, Monmouth came out of the box with three runs in the opening inning. Two singles brought in all three runs unearned. UChicago tallied two runs in the second frame when junior outfielder Edward Akers drew a bases-loaded walk and Massey delivered a RBI single.

The Maroons then went ahead 4-3 by scoring in the fourth and fifth innings. Massey smacked a solo home run and Prescott singled in a runner. However, the Fighting Scots tied the game with an unearned tally in the sixth.

In the seventh, UChicago put runners on the corners with one out and VanWazer stepped to the plate with the chance for a walk-off win. He delivered with a single to give the home team another victory.

UChicago raked 10 hits and made three errors on defense. Massey went 3-for-4 with one homer and two RBI. Prescott was 2-for-2 with two walks and one RBI. Troncelliti hit 2-for-4 at the dish.

Sophomore pitcher Mark Landgrebe threw the opening four innings, with six hits, three unearned runs, one walk and one strikeout. Simon Swanson (1-0) got the win over the final three innings with three hits, one unearned run and one strikeout.
