Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago baseball team closed out its three-game series at Washington University-St. Louis with a 12-1 loss on Sunday. The Maroons dropped to 4-13 and the Bears improved to 11-13.
Washington-St. Louis took over right from the first inning, scoring five runs on six hits in the opening frame. One run in the second inning, three in the fourth and one in the sixth gave the Bears a big 10-0 lead.
UChicago scored its lone run in the top of the seventh inning. The Maroons loaded the bases with two outs, and junior third baseman Kyle Engel drew a RBI walk to force a run in. WashU then scored two runs in the eighth to close out the 12-1 victory.
The Maroons committed four errors and were limited to six hits on the day. Senior pitcher Alex Terry (1-3) took the loss as the starter, lasting 3-1/3 innings with 10 hits, nine runs, one walk and one strikeout. Junior Simon Swanson threw the next 2-2/3 innings with two hits, one run and one walk. Sophomore Alex Athenson pitched the seventh inning, giving up two hits, two runs (one earned) and striking out two. Senior Chris Warren finished off by throwing the eighth inning.
