Late rally helps Maroons baseball salvage doubleheader split with WashU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICAGO, Ill. – A late game one rally helped the University of Chicago baseball team split its season-ending doubleheader with Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday. UChicago squandered an early lead but rallied for a 7-5 victory in the lid-lifter before falling 11-1 in the nightcap.

The Maroons close the 2014 campaign with a record of 10-27 while the Bears ran their record to 28-16.

Saturday was Senior Day for UChicago's nine seniors – outfielder Connor Bartelman, outfielder Brett Huff, infielder William Katzka, pitcher Ray Kim, pitcher Claude Lockhart, infielder Dylan Massey, pitcher Alex Terry, outfielder Ricky Troncelliti and pitcher Chris Warren. Over the past four years, the group compiled a record of 75-65-1 (.535 winning percentage).

Game One – UChicago 7, Washington-St. Louis 5

UChicago took the first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning on the heels of consecutive singles by junior infielder Kyle Engel and Huff. Sophomore catcher Tim Sonnefeldt's sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third and Bartelman cashed in with a two-run single up the middle. Engel then doubled the Maroons lead in the bottom of the third inning with a two-out single to score two more runs and put the hosts up 4-0.

Four-straight hits to start the top of the fourth inning brought the Bears back to within 4-3 and chased UChicago starter Mark Landgrebe in favor of Anthony DeRenzo. The junior was able to avoid further damage in the top of the fourth but then got touched for two runs in the top of the seventh inning that gave the Bears a 5-4 lead.

The decisive bottom of the eighth started with a pair of errors by the visitors. The third error of the inning proved costly as an errant throw from center field following freshman Thomas Prescott's RBI single allowed junior outfielder Edward Akers to trot home with the go-ahead run. The Maroons then added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Massey to take a 7-5 lead. Kim then shut down the side in order in the top of the ninth to nail down the victory.

UChicago totaled seven runs on 13 hits with two errors while WashU mustered five runs on 17 hits with four defensive miscues. Kim (2-3) earned the win for the Maroons with 2-1/3 perfect innings of relief and two strikeouts. Landgrebe's outing lasted three innings with nine hits and three runs (two earned). DeRenzo totaled 3-2/3 innings with eight hits, two runs and one strikeout.

Engel had the hot bat, going 3-for-3 with two RBI. Huff added three hits of his own in five at-bats. Junior third baseman Andrew VanWazer and Troncelliti both hit 2-for-5.

Game Two – Washington-St. Louis 11, UChicago 1

Game two was a tight affair early before the Bears blew the game open in the later innings. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the second, freshman outfielder Nicholas Toomey's RBI fielder's choice plated Engel to cut the lead to 2-1. The Bears made it 3-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning and then opened it up with four runs in the top of the seventh and two each in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth.

UChicago totaled eight hits in the finale, with Massey producing half of them by going 4-for-5. Terry took the loss for the Maroons, allowing five runs on 11 hits in six-plus innings of work. Junior Simon Swanson, Warren and Kim each allowed two runs in one inning of relief.
