UChicago baseball drops series opener with 13-1 loss to Washington-St. Louis

CHICAGO, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team dropped the opener of its three-game series with a 13-1 loss to Washington University-St. Louis on Friday. With the loss, the Maroons fell to 9-26 on the season while the Bears improved to 27-15.

The Bears scored in seven of their nine trips to the plate and tallied two or more runs in five-straight innings. WashU struck early in the game with one run in the top of the first inning and then added two runs in the third and three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead. Two runs in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings accounted for a 12-0 lead.

UChicago got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth inning on senior infielder Dylan Massey's second home run of the season. The Bears would add another run in the top of the ninth to account for the final score of 13-1.

WashU compiled 19 hits with one error while the Maroons mustered five hits with one error. Junior third baseman Andrew VanWazer was 2-for-4 at the plate for UChicago.

Freshman pitcher Thomas Prescott (1-4) took the loss on the mound, surrendering eight runs on 13 hits in 4-1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out one. Junior Kyle Nitiss (1-2/3 innings and three runs), sophomore Alex Athenson (one inning and one run), junior Simon Swanson (one inning) and junior Kyle Engel (one inning and one unearned run) pitched the rest of the game in succession.
