Box Score 2 MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Chicago baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at No. 9-ranked Rhodes College by scores of 15-6 and 2-0 on Wednesday.
The Maroons fell to 2-5 and the Lynx improved to 20-5 on the year.
Game One – Rhodes 15, UChicago 6
Rhodes scored all of its runs in the opening three innings, including nine runs in the second frame. The Lynx drew eight walks during that time.
UChicago scored three times in the second inning and three times in the fourth inning. Freshman outfielder Max Larsen laced a RBI triple to centerfield, while senior outfielder Edward Akers and senior third baseman Andrew VanWazer each tallied RBI groundouts. Senior shortstop Kyle Engel blasted a three-run home run to cap the scoring.
The Maroons recorded six hits and two errors. Engel finished 3-for-4 with one homer and three RBI. Freshman pitcher Robert Fuentes (0-1) took the loss in 2-1/3 innings as a starter. Sophomore William Potebnya-Meyer tossed the last 3-2/3 innings.
Game Two – Rhodes 2, UChicago 0
The second game of the doubleheader played to the strength of the pitchers. UChicago junior right-hander Nick Watson got the start and settled into a groove after the first inning. Rhodes scored on a single in the first inning but only got one unearned run after that. Watson (0-1) ended up throwing six innings and struck out five batters. His pitching line included six hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks.
The Maroons had seven hits but struggled to convert their opportunities. UChicago stranded 11 runners in the game, which included a bases-loaded third inning. Sophomore outfielder Nicholas Toomey and VanWazer each went 2-for-4 at the plate.
