Box Score 2 ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Chicago baseball team concluded its southern road swing with a pair of losses at Emory University 11-4 and 10-1 on Saturday.
The Maroons fell to 2-8 and the No. 26-ranked Eagles improved to 15-9.
Game One – Emory 11, UChicago 4
The hosts put up runs in each of the first four innings and then posted a five-spot in the sixth for some insurance. The Maroons scored one in the second, third and fourth frames themselves. Sophomore first baseman Thomas Prescott reached home plate on a passed ball, followed by senior outfielder William Katzka's RBI groundout and freshman shortstop Dean Christakes' RBI fielder's choice.
UChicago loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and brought in one run when freshman designated hitter Michael Davis was hit by a pitch. The visitors ended up with seven hits while committing three errors. Junior catcher Kevin Tully and Prescott knocked two hits each.
Senior pitcher Andrew VanWazer (0-2) started the game and went 3-1/3 innings. VanWazer's pitching line included 10 hits, six runs (five earned) and two walks. Senior pitcher Anthony DeRenzo tossed 4-2/3 innings of relief with six hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and three strikeouts.
Game Two – Emory 10, UChicago 1
UChicago's offense was held in check in game two, totaling only three hits. Katzka provided the lone run with a RBI single to center field in the top of the sixth. Emory posted three runs in first inning, two in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning to seize control of the game.
Prescott (1-1) absorbed the loss on the pitcher's mound. The lefty worked four innings, struck out one and allowed eight hits, seven runs (five earned) and two walks. Freshman Ricardo Fernandez threw two innings with two hits, two runs, four walks and one strikeout. Freshman Chase Packard wrapped up the last two innings, totaling two hits, one run, one walk and one strikeout. On defense, UChicago made two errors.
