Big ninth inning gives Maroon baseball a doubleheader split at Washington-St. Louis

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Chicago baseball team erupted for seven runs in the last inning of game two to earn a doubleheader split at Washington University-St. Louis on Saturday.

The Maroons ran their record to 9-14 and the Bears moved to 22-12.

Game One – Washington-St. Louis 10, UChicago 6

The opening contest was tied 2-2 after two innings of play. UChicago struck first by scoring two runs on an error in the first inning, while WashU evened it up with a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The home team took over from that point with eight runs between the fourth and sixth innings. The Maroons were down 10-2 in the seventh inning when sophomore shortstop Ryan Krob blasted a three-run home run to left field. Freshman outfielder Max Larsen closed out the scoring in the eighth with a sacrifice fly.

Sophomore Thomas Prescott (1-4) was the losing pitcher, lasting 4-2/3 innings with eight runs, 10 hits, six walks and one strikeout. Freshman Chase Packard threw the last 3-1/3 innings, totaling two unearned runs, three hits, one walk and two strikeouts.

UChicago recorded nine hits offensively and four errors defensively. Sophomore outfielder Nicholas Toomey led the way with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate while senior third baseman Kyle Engel was 2-for-5.

Game Two – UChicago 16, Washington-St. Louis 13

The second game was an offensive showcase throughout as only two innings out of nine were scoreless. The Maroons tallied their first run in the top of the fifth inning on a throwing error. The Bears blazed their way to a 9-1 lead after five innings and seemingly had the contest under control.

However, UChicago's bats caught fire and scored the next 15 runs over the last four innings. Prescott knocked a RBI double down the right field line in the sixth, while another two runs scored in the seventh on a wild pitch and a RBI groundout from junior catcher Kevin Tully. The game was tied up in the eighth at 9-9 thanks in part to a pair of WashU errors. A defensive miscue scored one run, followed by a RBI single by Krob. With the bases still loaded, Engel lofted a RBI sacrifice fly to right field and Tully singled through the right side to bring in the tying score.

The ninth inning featured seven runs on five hits for the Maroons. Engel was hit by a pitch to force in one and Tully delivered a bases-clearing double to left center. Prescott singled in Tully and freshman designated hitter Michael Davis capped the rally with a two-run homer to left field.

But the hosts kept the game interesting until the final out by scoring four times in the bottom of the ninth on a double, triple and sacrifice fly. Relief pitcher Simon Swanson then forced a final fly out to preserve the win, 16-13.

The two teams combined for 11 stolen bases (seven by WashU, four by UChicago) and eight errors (six by WashU, two by UChicago).

The Maroons collected 13 hits as Krob, Engel, Tully, Prescott and Larsen all had two hits each. Tully's five RBI were a career high.

Junior starting pitcher Lucas Friss hurled four innings, allowing eight runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Freshman Ricardo Fernandez came in next for 3-1/3 innings, tallying one unearned run and three hits. Freshman Robert Fuentes (1-2) got his first career win with 2/3 of an inning pitched, two runs, one hit and one walk. Swanson pitched the final inning with two runs and two hits.
