Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AURORA, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team won game one in extra innings and then racked up a season-high 20 hits in game two to sweep Aurora University 3-1 and 16-1 on Sunday.

The Maroons improved to 13-15 and stretched their winning streak to four games. The Spartans dropped to 19-17 on the year.

Game One – UChicago 3, Aurora 1

Junior pitcher Lucas Friss started the game on the mound and effectively shut down the Spartans all day. The right hander threw all eight innings of the game and only allowed one run. Aurora's lone score came in the bottom of the fourth on a bases-loaded single. The home team could not add to its tally though, as a fielder's choice got the lead runner thrown out at the plate and a fly ball ended the inning.

UChicago scored in the opening at-bat thanks to three-straight singles, capped by junior catcher Kevin Tully's RBI knock to left field. After Aurora tied the score in the fourth, the game went past its scheduled seven innings and into the eighth. The Maroons loaded the bases before sophomore first baseman Thomas Prescott drew a walk to force a run in. Senior designated hitter Andrew VanWazer accounted for the 3-1 final score with a sacrifice fly.

Friss improved his season record to 2-2 with the win. He allowed eight hits and struck out one.

The Maroons totaled seven hits in the game. Tully and senior third baseman Kyle Engel each went 2-for-4.

Game Two – UChicago 16, Aurora 1

The second game of the doubleheader was all about the big inning for the visitors. UChicago scored 15 of its 16 runs in only three innings – four in the third inning, four in the fourth inning and seven in the seventh inning.

The Maroons got the ball rolling in the third with sophomore shortstop Ryan Krob's two-run double. Engel and senior second baseman William Katzka followed up with RBI singles to make the score 4-0. In the fourth, sophomore outfielder Nicholas Toomey knocked in two with a single, Krob drove in one with a groundout and an error scored another at 8-0.

Aurora's run in the fifth inning came in on a balk. Katzka answered in the sixth with a RBI double to right field. Then the seventh-inning fireworks began when Krob launched a three-run homer down the left field line. Freshman outfielder Max Larsen tallied a RBI single, while the other runs came on two wild pitches and an error.

Prescott also threw a complete game for the Maroons as he earned the victory in seven innings of work. The sophomore lefty improved to 2-4 on the season with one run, four hits, one walk and three strikeouts.

UChicago pounded out 20 hits while committing one error. Six different players finished with multiple hits, led by Katzka's 4-for-4 performance with two RBI. Engel, Larsen and senior outfielder Edward Akers all went 3-for-4. Krob hit 2-for-5 with one home run and six RBI, while freshman catcher Matt Slodzinski was 2-for-4 at the plate.
