Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. – Rain ended Friday's game early and the University of Chicago baseball team absorbed a 3-1 loss to visiting Washington University-St. Louis after five innings of play.
The Maroons evened their record at 18-18 while the Bears improved to 31-14.
Washington-St. Louis got all of its runs in the first inning. A two-run double and a fielder's choice made the score 3-0 in favor of the visitors.
UChicago threatened to score in the third inning and then tallied one run in the fourth frame. Senior third baseman Kyle Engel extended his hitting streak to 26 games with a leadoff single. He scored on the very next batter when senior second baseman William Katzka smacked a RBI double to the fence.
The home team looked primed to put more on the board in the bottom of the fifth when the Maroons loaded the bases with two outs. But the Bears escaped the jam with a strikeout.
Significant, continuous rain in the sixth inning halted and eventually ended the game.
UChicago posted six hits and one error in the contest. Freshman outfielder Max Larsen went 2-for-2 at the plate.
Junior pitcher Lucas Friss (3-3) threw five innings and took the loss. He allowed three runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
