Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICAGO, Ill. – In its final games of the regular season, the University of Chicago baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Washington University-St. Louis 5-4 and 13-1 on Saturday.

The Maroons concluded 2015 with an overall record of 18-20. The Bears improved to 33-14.

Saturday was also Senior Day for seven UChicago seniors – outfielder Edward Akers, pitcher Anthony DeRenzo, infielder Kyle Engel, infielder William Katzka, pitcher Simon Swanson, pitcher/infielder Andrew VanWazer and infielder Nathan Wagner. The class compiled a four-year record of 75-71 (.514 winning percentage) entering the day.

Game One – Washington-St. Louis 5, UChicago 4

The home team scored the opening three runs of the game over the first two innings. A single and two wild pitches put sophomore outfielder Nicholas Toomey on third base to start the game. Engel then drove him in with a RBI sacrifice fly to center field. In the second frame, VanWazer scored on an error and freshman outfielder Max Larsen crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

The Maroons gave one back in the top of the third with an error of their own, but then escaped a bases-loaded jam by turning a double play. The Bears kept chipping away at the lead with RBI singles in the fourth and fifth inning. WashU then took the 4-3 lead in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

UChicago tied the game back up in the bottom half of the fifth on freshman catcher Matt Slodzinski's single to right center. However, the visitors plated the winning run with two outs in the seventh inning on a single through the left side.

The Maroons tallied nine hits and two errors. VanWazer, Toomey, junior first baseman Kevin Tully and sophomore shortstop Ryan Krob all collected two hits each.

Sophomore Thomas Prescott started the game and lasted 4-1/3 innings. The lefty's pitching line included four runs, eight hits, two walks and two strikeouts. Junior Nick Watson (5-3) took the loss in 2-2/3 innings of work, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

Game Two – Washington-St. Louis 13, UChicago 1

The Bears broke the game open in the first inning of game two. The first 14 batters all reached base to account for 12 runs.

Offense slowed down precipitously after that. Three-straight singles in the bottom of the first loaded the bases for the Maroons. One run came in on a balk, but WashU ended the threat with a strikeout. The Bears scored once more in the top of the fourth with a RBI single.

UChicago totaled seven hits and one error in the seven-inning contest. Katzka was 2-for-2 at the plate and Krob went 2-for-4.

Seven pitchers were used by the Maroons. Swanson (3-1) started the game and was saddled with the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits with three walks. DeRenzo tossed two innings with four runs, five hits and one walk. VanWazer hurled 1-1/3 scoreless innings while striking out one. Four freshman closed out the rest of the game, which included Chase Packard (2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H); Ricardo Fernandez (1 IP, 2 K); Robert Fuentes (1 IP, 1 K); and Michael Davis (1 IP, 2 K).
