HOMEWOOD, Ill. – In the first dual meet matches of the season, the University of Chicago men's and women's tennis teams got off on a good foot with a pair of team victories at Chicago State University on Sunday.

The Maroon women started the day with a 5-2 team victory. Doubles went UChicago's way handily as all three tandems came through by scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-1 to seize the doubles point. In the singles action that followed, the Maroons took four out of six with wins at the No. 1, 2, 4 and 5 spots. Multiple winners on the day included sophomore Ariana Iranpour, freshman Rachel Kim, freshman Kaela Bynoe and senior Stephanie Lee.

UChicago's men played later in the afternoon and emerged with a 6-1 win. The No. 1 doubles duo of sophomores Nicolas Chua and David Liu won 6-4, but the Cougars returned the favor at No. 2 by the identical score. Chicago State's default at No. 3 gave the Maroons the opening doubles point in the team score. Afterwards, UChicago won five of six singles, including four in straight sets. Chua, David Liu and freshman Max Liu won in both singles and doubles play.

"Both Chicago State teams are very talented, as are we, but I felt the difference in the matches was our competitive drive and discipline," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "Everyone came out ready to battle and ready to implement the things we have been stressing all week and I really felt that's where we gained the advantage. I was especially pleased with the women's doubles today, which looked much improved from the fall. All in all, it was a great start for the teams and gives us a little confidence heading into our next matches."
