CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's tennis team returned to action at the NCAA Division III level and delivered a 9-0 victory over Kalamazoo College on Saturday.
The No. 15-ranked Maroons evened their season record at 2-2 and the No. 38-ranked Hornets dropped to 1-2. UChicago's previous three opponents this year were all NCAA Division I opponents.
The home team dominated in every phase on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons swept all three doubles and all six singles to earn the shutout. UChicago did not drop more than three games total in any of the singles matches.
Three different players put up 6-0, 6-0 wins – freshman Rachel Kim at No. 2, junior Tiffany Chen at No. 5 and senior Stephanie Lee at No. 6. Sophomore Ariana Iranpour and freshman Kaela Bynoe combined to win 8-0 at No. 2 doubles as well. Senior Lucy Tang, Bynoe and Iranpour all won singles matches to round out the effort.
"After three-straight Division I matches to start the season, it really looked like we were ready to get back to playing our peers," said Head Coach Jay Tee. "I thought the experiences against bigger and faster teams helped to slow down some of the action and allowed us to be very aggressive. Our doubles has gotten better every day and now our singles is improving too. If we keep putting in the work, this could be a very dangerous team come tournament time."
