CHICAGO – Dominant performances all throughout the lineup led the University of Chicago wrestling team to a trio of team wins while serving as host of the Chicago Duals on Saturday.
The seven-team event in the Henry Crown Field House included UChicago, University of Dubuque, Manchester University, Milwaukee School of Engineering, Saint John's University, Trine University and Wabash College.
The Maroons started out the day against Trine, which they won handily 38-9. The two teams exchanged forfeits in the first two matches before UChicago won seven of the last eight matches. The squad delivered three pins from freshman Kahlan Lee-Lermer (149 pounds), senior Michael Sepke (165 pounds) and freshman Adam Rizk (Heavyweight). Freshmen Grant Morrison (141 pounds) and Steve Bonsall (157 pounds) both earned major decisions.
UChicago's middle match was a 26-15 win over Dubuque. The Spartans received two forfeits at the onset to take a 12-0 lead. But the Maroons roared back with seven wins in-a-row. Freshman John Jayne picked up a first-period pin at 197 pounds, freshman Kyle Peisker shutout his opponent 11-0 at 157 pounds and sophomore Jason Lynch posted a 12-3 major decision of his own.
In their final matchup of the day, the Maroons secured another come-from-behind victory over Manchester, 33-16. The Spartans used a forfeit a major decision and a pin to score all 16 of their points in the opening three matches. Once again, UChicago took seven-straight matches from there for a comfortable team win. Lee-Lermer and Rizk tallied pins while Lynch and Bonsall each dominated to earn technical falls. Sepke and junior Nicholas DiNapoli both scored matching 11-3 major decisions.
Three Maroons were a perfect 3-0 on the day –Lee-Lermer, Sepke and Lynch. Bonsall went 2-0.
"Our guys have to be proud of themselves – we have four out of 10 starters out with injuries and in two of the matches, we came back from 12-0 and 16-0 deficits," said Head Coach Leo Kocher. "We had five freshmen who all stepped up and got the job done. We gave up four forfeits on the day. Out of the matches we actually wrestled, the guys were 21-4 – pretty good for a bunch of backups and freshmen."
