Offense blows up as UChicago baseball batters Beloit, 21-8 and 13-10

BELOIT, Wis. – The University of Chicago baseball team put on an offensive showcase on Saturday, smacking 45 hits and seizing both ends of a doubleheader at Beloit College.

The Maroons improved to 17-6 and dropped the Bucs to 8-14-1.


Game One – UChicago 21, Beloit 8

The visitors ended the opening game early via 10-run rule. UChicago exploded for four runs in the second inning, two in the third, five in the fifth, four in the sixth and six in the seventh. All told, the Maroons pounded a season-high 24 hits and had four players with four hits apiece.

Sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey and sophomore shortstop Max Brzostowski led the way with their bats. Hickey went 4-for-6 with three doubles and five RBI out of the leadoff spot. Brzostowski was 4-for-5 with five RBI. Sophomore catcher Ian Bohn hit 4-for-5 with three RBI and sophomore outfielder Josh Parks was 4-for-5 with one RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Brady Sarkon was 3-for-5 at the plate.

Sophomore pitcher Joe Liberman got the start on the mound and improved to 2-0 on the season. He went 4.1 innings before giving way to sophomore Alex McGimpsey for the remaining 2.2 innings.


Game Two – UChicago 13, Beloit 10

The Maroons remained hot in the batter's box, racking up 21 hits in game two. UChicago scored in each of the first five innings, taking an 11-2 lead.

However, the hosts made their move to make the game interesting. Beloit chopped the deficit to 11-9 after seven innings. The visitors gave themselves some breathing room in the ninth inning by scoring on a sacrifice fly and a double steal of second base and home plate. The Bucs pushed across one in the ninth, but were then held in check for the final two outs.

Seven different Maroons put up multiple hits in the contest. The senior duo of third baseman Tim Sonnefeldt (two RBI) and first baseman Thomas Prescott (one RBI) both tallied four hits in five at-bats. Bohn was 3-for-5 with three RBI and junior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen hit 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Freshman pitcher Nate Hendley (1-1) earned his first collegiate victory. He threw five innings and five relievers wrapped up the contest. Junior Ricardo Fernandez, freshman Patrick Rogers, junior Chase Packard, freshman Arno Curtis and junior Michael Davis all saw action on the hill.
