Maroon baseball loses a pair at Case Western Reserve

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLEVELAND – The University of Chicago baseball team was burned by late-inning scoring from Case Western Reserve University and lost a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Maroons fell to 17-8. The Spartans improved to 19-14.

Game One – CWR 7, UChicago 5

UChicago's first scoring opportunity came in the opening inning, but the runner coming around third base was thrown out at home. The visitors made up for it in the second frame. Sophomore shortstop Max Brzostowski singled up the middle for one run and sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey's fielder's choice plated another.

Case Western Reserve tied the game up 2-2 in the third thanks to a pair of Maroon errors. Hickey recaptured the lead for UChicago with a RBI single through the left side in the fourth inning. But the hosts went up for good with five more tallies between the sixth and seventh innings.

In the top of the ninth, the Maroons rallied to make it close. A walk, a single and a walk loaded the bases with no outs. Sophomore designated hitter Brady Sarkon absorbed a hit-by-pitch to force in one run, and sophomore outfielder Josh Parks grounded out to plate another. But the Spartans stranded the tying run at second base to close out the game.

The Maroons totaled 10 hits but made five errors defensively. Hickey, Parks, junior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen and senior first baseman Thomas Prescott all had two hits apiece.

Sophomore starting pitcher Brenton Villasenor (5-1 record) took the loss in seven innings. He allowed four earned runs, eight hits and one walk while striking out three. Sophomore Ravi Bakhai threw the final inning of relief.

Game Two – CWR 7, UChicago 1

The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel throughout until CWR broke out with a six-run eighth inning to seize control.

Before that, UChicago freshman pitcher Nate Hendley kept the Spartans at bay. The right hander struck out six batters through 6.1 innings pitched. He allowed one run with four hits and two walks.

The Maroon offense was limited to six hits in the game. They were able to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the eighth thanks to sophomore catcher Ian Bohn's RBI single to right. But CWR burst the game open in the bottom of the eighth, which included a three-run homer.

Freshman Patrick Rogers (0-1) took the loss. Juniors Chase Packard and Michael Davis each threw 0.2 innings of relief.

Bohn provided three of UChicago's six hits in the contest.
