Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLEVELAND – Despite a ninth-inning rally in game two, the University of Chicago baseball team lost twice at Case Western Reserve University on Sunday.

The Maroons fell to 17-10 on the season. The Spartans moved to 21-14.

Game One – CWR 9, UChicago 4

UChicago struck the opening blow in its first at-bats. Senior first baseman Thomas Prescott knocked a RBI single to center field and sophomore designated hitter Brady Sarkon scored one on a groundout that turned into error.

However, the visitors gave the lead back in the bottom of the first as three errors led to three unearned runs. The Spartans put up three more in the fourth inning to go up 6-2.

The Maroons tallied one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Sophomore outfielder Josh Parks posted a RBI single and sophomore catcher Ian Bohn had a RBI groundout. Those would be their last runs of the game.

Starting pitcher Joe Liberman (2-1) took the loss in four innings work. The sophomore allowed three earned runs, six hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts. Freshman Patrick Murphy (2 IP, 3 R) and sophomore Alex McGimpsey (1.2 IP) accounted for the remaining four innings.

UChicago made three errors defensively and totaled nine hits offensively. Junior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen reached base four times in five at-bats with two hits and two walks. Bohn and Parks had two hits and one RBI apiece.

Game Two – CWR 6, UChicago 4

Prescott put his team ahead for the second-straight game in the opening inning with a RBI double. Once more, Case Western Reserve answered in the first as well with a two-run homer.

An RBI single by sophomore shortstop Justin Lo and a sacrifice fly by Prescott in consecutive innings put UChicago back up 3-2. The Spartans proceeded to score in the sixth, seventh and eighth to make it 6-3.

Three-straight walks with one out in the ninth put the Maroons in business. With the bags full, Parks lifted a RBI sacrifice fly to right field. But the hosts ended the threat and the game by forcing another fly out.

UChicago manufactured 11 hits and made one error. Larsen went 3-for-5 with two doubles. Parks was 2-for-3 with one walk and one RBI. Sophomore outfielder Connor Hickey hit 2-for-5 out of the leadoff spot.

Freshman Arno Curtis pitched 4.2 innings as the starter. His line included two runs, three hits, two walks and one strikeout. Freshman Daniel Smith (1-2) took the loss in two innings with three runs, two hits and one strikeout. Junior Ricardo Fernandez (0.2 IP, 1 R) and freshman Jon Kruppe (0.2 IP) each made relief appearances.
