Box Score ST. LOUIS – The University of Chicago baseball team wrapped up the 2017 season with a 14-5 loss at Washington University-St. Louis on Sunday.
The Maroons concluded with a 22-15 record. The No. 15-ranked Bears moved to 26-8.
Washington-St. Louis jumped out to a big lead by scoring in each of the first four innings. Going into the fifth inning, the hosts held a 7-0 lead.
However, UChicago battled back to stay in it with one run in the fifth and four in the sixth. Junior outfielder Maximiliano Larsen got things rolling with a two-out RBI single up the middle. The two-out runs kept coming in the next frame. Senior third baseman Tim Sonnefeldt knocked a RBI single to left field, and sophomore second baseman Max Brzostowski followed immediately with a RBI double down the left field line. After a walk, Larsen delivered again, this time with a two-run single to left.
With the margin chopped all the way down to 7-5, the Bears took advantage of several UChicago miscues to score seven runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the contest out of reach.
UChicago totaled eight hits and two errors in the game. Larsen was 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Freshman pitcher Nate Hendley (2-2) took the loss in a four-inning start. Freshman Arno Curtis and junior Michael Davis pitched in relief.
