Maroon baseball defeats Benedictine 6-4 under the lights

Box Score

LISLE, Ill. – The University of Chicago baseball team capitalized on several Benedictine University miscues and suppressed the home team's offense to earn a 6-4 victory on Tuesday night.

The Maroons (22-11 record) won their fifth-straight heading into the final weekend of the season. The Eagles fell to 23-16.

Sophomore catcher Ian Bohn put the visitors ahead right away with a RBI double to right center with two outs in the first inning. The Eagles answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. However, that would be all the momentum that Benedictine could muster. In a staff performance that featured seven Maroon pitchers, UChicago only allowed one hit over the remaining eight innings.

Bohn kept up his hot hitting with a RBI single in the top of the third before coming around to score on senior first baseman Thomas Prescott's RBI double down the left field line. Two errors made both runs unearned as UChicago tied the game at 3-3.

In the fourth, sophomore outfielder Josh Parks singled, stole second base and scored on senior third baseman Tim Sonnefeldt's single through the left side. An infield throwing error made it 5-3 two batters later.

Benedictine chopped the deficit to 5-4 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Parks then provided some breathing room in the top of the eighth with a RBI single to center. In the ninth, UChicago handed the ball to junior closer Michael Davis. The right-hander coaxed a double-play roller back to the mound, followed by a fly ball to earn his third save of the season.

UChicago finished with eight hits and two errors. Bohn (two RBI) and Parks (one RBI) both went 2-for-4 in the batter's box. Parks also supplied two stolen bases.

Junior pitcher Ricardo Fernandez (1-1 record) was the first reliever out of the pen. He hurled three lockdown innings with no hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Freshman Daniel Smith got the start, with additional relief appearances by freshman Jon Kruppe, junior Chase Packard, freshman Arno Curtis, freshman Patrick Murphy and Davis.
