PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. 5 University of Chicago men's tennis team ran into a tough second-ranked Bowdoin College squad in a 7-2 loss Wednesday in California.
The Maroons (10-2) sustained just their second loss of the season to the Polar Bears (8-0), who swept doubles play, but it wasn't easy.
Senior Nicolas Chua and first-year Jeremy Yuan each won at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to account for the Maroons' two points, but several other matches proved close against Bowdoin. Each UChicago doubles team scored at least five points and the No. 3 squad of Charlie Pei and Bobby Bethke narrowly fell in a tiebreaker.
Pei also put up a battle at No. 4 singles, falling in a tiebreaker in a tight 7-6 second set.
"There's no question that Bowdoin is a good team and they proved that today," Head Coach Jay Tee said. "That being said, I think we left some points out there that could have been ours. Even though we lost, I'm hoping we learned some tough lessons today that we can use the rest of the season, ant that starts on Friday morning with Williams.
"I'm confident that we have the right personnel, now it's just a matter of getting everyone going on the same day and bringing a championship mindset to each and every point we play."
