Box Score CHICAGO – The University of Chicago women's soccer team jumped out to a big lead and closed out Senior Day with a 4-2 home win over New York University on Sunday.
The No. 9-ranked Maroons improved to 11-1-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Violets fell to 7-6 overall and 0-4 in the UAA.
Before the start of Sunday's game, UChicago recognized and honored its 12-member senior class on the field – Tabitha Bishop, Austen Dellinger, Maddie DeVoe, Peyton Jefferson, Nicole Kaspi, Anna Kenig-Ziesler, Miranda Malone, Christina Pirrotta, Sara Salvino, Adriana Shutler, Emma Smith and Nicole Willing. Since the start of the 2017 season, the Maroons have posted an overall record of 60-11-6 (.818 winning percentage) with three NCAA postseason appearances.
A rowdy first half featured plenty of fireworks as the teams combined for five goals in the opening 39 minutes. UChicago looked to be in complete control after 26 minutes of play, scoring three times. Seven minutes in, Kaspi rolled a precision pass into open space on the right side of the box past NYU's defense. Jefferson ran onto the ball and beat the onrushing goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Then disaster struck for NYU when a long ball into the box was accidentally headed in for an own goal in the 19th minute. Junior Annie Mitchell made it 3-0 at the 26:00 mark by depositing a left-footed volley inside the right post off first-year Livia Sabloff's corner kick.
However, the Violets started a comeback two minutes later. The visitors sent a long ball on the counterattack that sprung the forward who converted from 13 yards straightaway. The deficit was subsequently chopped to 3-2 on a penalty kick in the 39th minute.
A tightly-contested second half ensued, with plenty of back-and-forth on possession. The clinching blow eventually came in the 74th minute. UChicago's charge up the middle of the field was tackled away in the final third, but first-year Josie Majowka pounced on the loose ball unmarked and scored 1v1 with a shot through the goalkeeper to account for the 4-2 final score.
The Maroons led the shots category 15-9 and the corner kicks column 8-6. UChicago's Smith got the start in goal and was relieved by Malone (10-1-2 record), who made four saves with two goals allowed to get the win.
